Report: Still No Reopening Date for Harris Teeter

S. Glebe Road grocery store has been closed since the spring because of interior flooding.

The Harris Teeter grocery store located at 3600 S. Glebe Road just north of Alexandria will remain closed for the foreseeable future, according to ARLnow.

The store closed in May after a sewage backup caused interior flooding. It was determined the backup was caused by a clog at the nearby Arlington County Water Pollution Control Plan.

A Harris Teeter representative told Patch in August that the store would reopen but offered no firm date.

A Harris Teeter spokeswoman told ARLnow the store will not reopen until the company can be assured that measures are in place to prevent another sewage incident.

“We are actively working with both the county and our landlord to discuss solutions to make sure that which happened does not happen again,” company spokeswoman Danna Jones told ARLnow. “Once those solutions are implemented, we are ready to start work on the interior of the store, and at that point, Harris Teeter will make various public announcements to share the good news with everyone.”

ARLnow reported that no lawsuits have been brought against Arlington County in response to the sewage incident.

If you're missing Harris Teeter, the grocery store has locations in the West End (4641 Duke St., Alexandria), Shirlington (4250 Campbell Ave., Arlington) and Pentagon Row (900 Army Navy Dr., Arlington).

A new Harris Teeter that will be part of a mixed-use development in North Old Town is currently under construction

Ugh. I liked the manageable size and convenience of that store...I've been cobbling together replacement solutions, but they all involve multiple trips (Trader Joe's for produce and meats, Target for paper goods, national brands, etc.). I tried Shoppers a few weeks ago and that was a huge mistake - the organic produce was absolutely disgusting, everything I picked up was either moldy and/or ancient. Let's hope HT can get this resolved and reopen!

That's odd. I find Shoppers produce selection and quality light years beyond any other market in the area. I can get 10 limes there for a buck. The limes at the baby Giant on Monroe cost 89 cents a pop! My only complaint about Shoppers is their apparent refusal to ever have more than two registers open at once. The lines are unbearable.

That is how Shoppers keeps their costs down. My husband heard that the Harris Teeter will not reopen but something else will go in there.

I suspect Shoppers' regular produce sees much more turnover than the organic. I prefer organic when I am eating/using the skin of the fruit or veg, and was looking for limes, apples (sadly I'd missed Toigo at the farmers' market) and grape tomatoes. They had a huge stack of organic grape tomatoes in the clamshells, but every single one of them, when inspected, was moldy. They had a small stack of organic apples, but they looked so ancient they were starting to shrivel. I passed. They had no organic citrus at all. And yes, the lines were ridiculous too - I waited over 15 minutes. I do think their selection of ethnic foodstuffs, particularly Mexican/Central American, is quite good.

I simply don't BELIEVE this place is ever reopening. There have been so many rumors of different dates it would reopen and HT is providing no updates to the public: I stopped getting mail about that location a long time ago. I think HT is just stringing customers along. If HT is waiting for some "guarantee" from the county that their never be a sewage backup again at the water treatment facility, don't hold your breath! A company this size should have FLOOD insurance if they are going to set up a store on a 1st floor of a building 1 block from a river. Sadly, when that HT was open, I use to shop there AT LEAST once or twice a week. Since it closed, I've shopped at HT only about 3 times since May....the other locations simply SUCK. The Shoppers 1 block away or the Giant down on Glebe road are simply easier to get to.
