A Polish delegation visited several spots in Del Ray on Tuesday as part of the U.S. State Department’s International Visitor Leadership Program.

About a dozen school, museum and theater personnel, cafe owners and representatives from various cultural organizations from the Eastern European nation made stops at Del Ray Artisans, Artfully Chocolate, A Show of Hands and St. Elmo’s Coffee Pub.

Amber Gordon of the Alexandria Commission for the Arts helped lead the delegation through Del Ray on a tour titled “The Role of Culture in the Development of Local Communities.”

Gordon and others shared how the local art scene helped revitalize Mt. Vernon Avenue and Del Ray in the 1990s, a subject that was touched on in a March Del Ray Patch article about the 20th anniversary of Del Ray Artisans.

The program was arranged by the Meridian International Center.

Thank you everyone for making the day so productive and so much fun! Every single person in the group had great questions and contributed to the overall excitement - and the translators, you both were amazing! Marlin Lord and Linda Hill - special thanks - so much help from both of you made it possible! A special shout out to Christian at Velocity! He came out, introduced himself to everyone, explained Velocity and said, "Well, here's something I've never seen before - a walking tour of Del Ray!"
