Ask the Candidates: Submit Your Questions for Mayoral and Council Forum

Patch is teaming with ACTion Alexandria and the Alexandria Chapter of the NAACP to host the event, and Patch readers can suggest debate questions.

Patch is teaming up with ACTion Alexandria and the Alexandria Chapter of the NAACP to cosponsor a forum for mayoral and City Council candidates in Alexandria.

The event is scheduled for Oct. 15 at the George Washington Middle School auditorium. Doors will open at 6:30 p.m., with the forum expected to run from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m.

The event will feature a one-on-one debate between Mayor Bill Euille (D) and independent challenger Andrew Macdonald. The half-hour head-to-head will follow a 90-minute forum featuring all 12 council candidates.

Patch is reaching out to readers for questions for the event. What are the issues in the city on your mind this election season? Is there a particular question you would like asked of the candidates?

Leave your suggestions in the comments section and the forum committee will take them into consideration.

See everyone the evening of Oct. 15!

Here are my questions for the other 11 candidates:

Q1) Robert Kraus (http://robert4citycouncil.com/) says he would like to restore 2007 spending levels and accomplish this by auditing Alexandria and eliminate waste, off budget items, administrative overhead, failed programs & projects. Do you support his efforts to accomplish this and return the savings ($1400 a year) back to Alexandria homeowners?

Q2) Robert Kraus (http://robert4citycouncil.com/) says he would like to repurpose buildings already owned by the city - like Minnie Howard - and work to move offices out of leased space where possible. Do you support these types of efforts to save taxpayers millions of dollars each year?

Q3) Robert Kraus (http://robert4citycouncil.com/) says we need to reevaluate the Waterfront Project now and put everything on hold. Do you support this so the city stops making the same mistakes over and over again?

Respectfully submitted by Robert Kraus

For Andrew MacDonald: You gave an interview to the Washington Examiner back when you resigned as Vice Mayor and said the reason was that you needed "me time." Later on, you said the reason was so because you had to care for your elderly mother. What was the real reason, and why should we trust you not to just resign again if elected this time?

The recent SOL scores have shown an impending crisis in ACPS. Many of you have cited pre-K education as a solution but how do you as a Council Member or School Board Member plan to address the challenges faced by students currently enrolled in ACPS, especially those in high school and middle school?

DISCLAIMER - I am volunteering on multiple campaigns this election cycle but this question is unrelated to my work on these campaigns.

Thanks, James. The forum we're cosponsoring will not feature school board candidates.

Q for Mayor Euille: You were Mayor when the BRAC 133 project was fostered on the City, and many citizens feel you failed to protect the nearby neighborhoods from its impact. On your watch, Deputy City Manager Mark Jinks wrote the infamous letter to the Army telling them that the City considered both possible BRAC sites as equal and that no further traffic analyses were needed. This was the City's only official position on the potential to bring BRAC to the Mark Center site. Did you see and approve of the letter prior to it being sent?

For Alicia Hughes - Michael Lee Pope of the Gazette Packet has told people that you no longer live in The Strand Apartment building and he showed a picture of a Cameron Station townhouse as your new address. Why did you leave the Strand? Were all lawsuits related to your stay there either settled or dismissed? Are you renting now or did you buy property? Can you provide a lease or title to prove that you still live in Alexandria? Is this a temporary living arrangement or a permanent one? Where are you working these days and do you intend to stay in Alexandria if you get a job offer in another area similar to the job you took in Delaware?

For all candidates: Considering the recent problems with the Schools capital budget and other issues, would you be in favor of returning to an appointed School Board?

Recent changes (expanding businesses, development of Potomac Yard) in and near Del Ray have started to put a strain on traffic and parking. How will ensure the traffic and parking situation in Del Ray don't get worse?

More questions for the other candidates:

a) For current city council members: Robert Kraus says the DelRay Trolley is a mistake. That we already had a free Dash bus that was a failure. Do you think it is fair that tax payers should foot the bill for another failed project like this?

b) For the "BRAC 5" current/former council members: you all signed a letter saying "the impact of the Mark center site is manageable" and that "no significant impact" would be felt, why should we trust you now on the Waterfront and other projects when you failed to listen to the voters concerns in regard to the Mark Center project?

c) Will you take Robert Kraus's 2 for 1 pledge concerning new spending programs? That, like Robert, you will only vote for new spending projects that come with $2 in savings/cuts for each $1 in new spending?

Respectfully submitted,

Robert Kraus

We hear a lot from the candidates:
a) about getting developers to do more,
b) about helping businesses in Alexandria by reducing or removing rules and regulations they must operate under,
c) about the importance of listening to what Alexandrians say and are concerned about.

Questions:
1) Why is it not hypocritical to ask more of developers but less of businesses?

2) How will you balance requests from the residents for protection from the consequences of nearby businesses with reducing or removing rules and regulations businesses must operate under?
