Overlooked: VFW Memorial
A peek at things in the neighborhood you might miss at first glance.
This week, Del Ray Patch is taking a look at some of the historical markers and other things that might be overlooked in the hustle and bustle of everyday life.
In front of Alexandria’s Union Station sits a tall pillar with a cross on top. It is the city’s Veterans of Foreign Wars Monument honoring citizens killed in World War I.
A faded plaque on the north side of the monument reads “Donated by Mrs. Florence Angelo Cannaday, Richmond, Virginia. Erected in Memory of Alexandria War Dead by Russell Mitchell Post No. 609, Veterans of Foreign Wars and Citizens of Alexandria, November 11, 1940.”
At the foot of the monument sits a vase statue with a fish on it.
In Del Ray, George Washington High School students who were killed in World War II are memorialized on a monument in front of what is now George Washington Middle School. Alexandria citizens who were lost in the Vietnam War are memorialized at the Versace Plaza in front of Mount Vernon Recreation Center.

There used to be a tank at the VFW memorial as well. A little WW I Ford M1917 tank (a copy of the French FT) sat there until about 1990 when they apparently sold it, presumably to a collector.
