NWS: Wind Advisory Thursday, with Gusts Up to 50 MPH
Weather service warns gusts could down trees and power lines.
The National Weather Service has issued a Wind Advisory for Northern Virginia Thursday from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Residents should expect winds blowing from the northwest in the 20 to 25 mph range with possible gusts up to 50 mph.
The higher wind gusts could knock over trees and knock out power, the weather service warns.
"Winds this strong can make driving difficult, especially for 'high profile' vehicles," such as trucks, vans or SUVs, the weather service notes.
State Farm Insurance notes on its site that when driving in windy weather, keep an eye out for flying debris and take extra caution when driving near any vehicles carrying light-weight cargo.
A gale warning is in effect for the Potomac on Thursday.
Looking ahead, forecasters say the area has a 50 percent chance of seeing snow between just after midnight Friday night and 1 p.m. Saturday.
