Mexican and Peruvian Restaurant Planned for North Del Ray

Proposal calls for overhaul of Mount Vernon Avenue building.

More Mexican food may be on its way to Del Ray.

Jose Mario Cabero and Jose Guillermo Cabero submitted a permit application to Alexandria in late October to renovate the building located at 3401 Mount Vernon Ave. and turn it into a restaurant specializing in Mexican and Peruvian cuisine.

According to the permit, the renovation would be significant, overhauling a 1,200-square-foot wooden building with a basement that was built in 1920. In the renovation process, roughly 203 square feet of the existing building would be demolished and an addition of 521 square feet would be constructed.

The décor will feature “original and sustainable materials” including a permeable driveway and a patio that will be surrounded by an organic herb garden that will screen restaurant patrons and provide shade.

The proposal calls for 16 interior seats and 12 outdoor seats on the seasonal patio. A reduction of three required parking spaces is requested in order to allow the outdoor seating. The restaurant would be open seven days a week.

“The restaurant will be a moderately priced restaurant catering to families, businesses in the area, and a going-out crowd during weekends,” the application reads.

The menu will focus on tacos, carne asada and chicken dishes. It will also offer a selection of salads and sandwiches as well as the sale of alcoholic beverages.
