Effort Underway to Name Bridge After Judy Lowe

Councilman Rob Krupicka's aide introduces petition to name Monroe Avenue Bridge after longtime Del Ray resident.

Throughout the planning process for the development of Potomac Yard, Judy Lowe was said to have always been quick with a correction when someone mistakenly referred to Route 1’s Monroe Avenue Bridge as the Monroe Street Bridge.

When Lowe passed away last month at the age of 75, it was suggested at her funeral that the bridge be named in her honor as a fitting tribute to her service to the city.

At the Del Ray Citizens Association holiday party Monday night at , Elizabeth Jones, aide to Councilman Rob Krupicka, introduced a petition to name the bridge after Lowe.

Lowe, who lived in Del Ray for more than 50 years, was an active member of the DRCA and the Alexandria Democratic Committee. In 2003, she was granted a lifetime achievement award from the Alexandria Commission on Women in honor of her devotion to the city.

Jones said it can be “a long process” to rename things in Alexandria. The City Council has a naming committee that oversees and grants such requests.

In September, council approved the naming of an Old Town alley after Douglas Thurman, a longtime Republican advocate and activist dedicated to historical preservation in the city. Council moved in February to name a park along Route 1 after Ruby Tucker, another longtime community activist credited for leading the effort to cleanup the city’s Lynhaven neighborhood.

DRCA officers discussed moving the petition online at a later date. Del Ray Patch will let you know when it is available.
