Spending the Morning at Del Ray Cafe
Trying out Del Ray Cafe with a few friends and tots in tow.
When my girlfriend recently suggested that our posse of moms meet up at the new Del Ray Cafe on E. Howell Avenue for breakfast, I wasn't sure what to expect.
Breakfast is easily my favorite meal of the day, so convincing me to try out a new spot doesn’t take a lot of arm-twisting. Initial reports suggested that the cafe was still ironing out service details. Also, going to a restaurant with tots in tow can be stressful.
Luckily my visiting in-laws graciously offered to watch my older girls while the baby and I went out. Down to a more manageable number, off I went.
I’m so glad I did.
Our group tried out the quiche, various egg dishes, parfait, lots of croissants and a variety of coffee drinks. Everything was fabulous. The food was fresh and simple and the coffee was delicious. The service was prompt and attentive, easily accommodating parts of our group that had to order separately or leave early.
We sat upstairs in a nice window nook, at a large table with bench seating. It was perfect for our little group of six adults, two tots and two infants. With lots of windows and exposed wooden rafters, the space is bright and open. The decor is clean with a touch of rustic, giving it a fresh and casual vibe.
While the menu is varied, there is a clear French influence. French owner Laurent Janowsky has also owned La Bergerie in Old Town since 2000. Janowsky previously worked at the Watergate under the late chef Jean-Louis Palladin.
Among our ever-growing selection of Del Ray eateries, Del Ray Cafe defines itself through its environmental sustainability focus and local, natural and organic foods.
I find their commitment to local and organic foods very appealing. I would love for the restaurant to highlight the sources of key ingredients, such as their farm-fresh eggs from Amish country.
Overall, our breakfast experience at Del Ray Cafe was exceptional. We were welcomed, strollers and all. The environment was relaxed and refreshing, just perfect for our mom’s morning out.
Without a doubt, we will be back.
Have you tried out the Del Ray Cafe? What did you think? Tell us in the comments.

Thank you, Jessica! We are so happy everyone enjoyed themselves. We are humbled by the outpouring of support from neighbors during our early days and we look forward to a long relationship with the Del Ray neighborhood. We are working on our permanent menu which will highlight our primary sources of ingredients. We would like everyone to know that, recognizing the significant issue it can cause, we have banned peanut products from our menu. We are also working on offering more vegetarian options. Thanks again, Del Ray!

I took my manager Willis Nichols and two other friends for lunch on Friday. We had a wonderful lunch, truly enjoyed everything we ordered. The place is a great addition to Del Ray. Nice job Margaret..
