Looking Outside of Del Ray

Comparing waterfront homes in the region

I blame the 80-degree weather we had this past week. Something about the heat and humidity makes me dream about a home on the water—a place with cool breezes and some room to roam. Luckily, in the Mid-Atlantic region, there is no shortage of waterfront options for those that can afford it.

I think I would be well-suited to manor life. Bohemia Manor Farm, in Chesapeake City, Md., is just that—a manor. With 11 bedrooms and seven full bathrooms, there is plenty of room to entertain. Of course, cleaning 14,000 square feet of living space would be tedious and I can’t imagine the mortgage on an almost $13 million property, but just think about the garden parties you could throw on the sprawling grounds.

Lands End, in Chestertown, Md., is priced more modestly—under $8 million. This home charms me with its Cape Cod styling, cozy spaces and extensive trimwork. The pool with a view doesn’t hurt either. I’m pretty sure my family could squeeze into five bedrooms and four full bathrooms.

If a waterfront home that comes with its own name isn’t affordable, consider this Stafford property with sweeping views of the Potomac River. Although a relative steal at $1,350,000, prepare for some much needed updating on the interior. Offering 6,000 square feet of living space on almost four acres, this home would be a great retreat just far enough from the hustle and bustle of the D.C. area to feel truly relaxing.
