NORTHERN VIRGINIA — U.S. Sen. Mike Crapo (R-Idaho) was arrested and charged with driving under the influence early Sunday morning in the Del Ray neighborhood of Alexandria.
Crapo was pulled over near the corner of Mount Vernon and Hume avenues after an Alexandria police officer on routine patrol noticed the senator’s vehicle run a red light. Crapo was arrested at 12:45 a.m. and taken into custody “without incident,” according to a police spokesperson.
Crapo was then transported to the city’s Adult Detention Center and later released on an unsecured $1,000 bond.
Crapo's press secretary declined to comment.
The senior senator from Idaho is scheduled to appear in court on Jan. 4.
It has been expected Crapo would take over the top Republican spot next year on the Senate Banking Committee.
Crapo is a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, which prohibits consuming alcohol.

I wonder if we'll find out if he was at a bar or a private home. Does anyone know where he lives when he's in DC? Was he just passing through DelRay to/from somewhere else? I'm not aware of any Mormon temples in Del Ray but I could be wrong about that.

Just so I am clear. It is ok to Drink and drive if you are Jewish, Christian, Muslim, or don't believe in God? Are we going to list the race, creed, and religion of all who break a law in town? Gee what does this sound good to you?

His religion is relevant here. He claimed to be a tee-totaling Mormon to all of his constituents. He ran on a platform of conservatism based on part on those religious beliefs. Now he is proven to be a flaming liar and hypocrite.

Gail, you make me sad. Your comments are plain ugly and gossipy and just sad. You are just a very angry and sad person. I am sorry for you.

Gail is just stating facts. Fox News says pretty much exactly the same thing:

Yes, there are two LDS churches nearby. One in Alexandria and one off Arlington Ridge in Crystal City area.

I don't feel the least bit sad but whatever. You're entitled to your interpretation. When you start talking about me rather than focus on the facts, I know I'm right. I wasn't the one who ran on a platform of religious conservatism and lied to consituents. Frankly, I don't think a DUI is necessarily grounds for Crapo to resign, but if he lied about who and what he is, his constituents might demand it. If he has a drinking problem, I hope he gets professional help. If this was a one time stupid mistake, all he needs to do is own up to it. If there is more to the story, I'm sure some enterprising reporter will dig it up. Bottom line - Crapo has been exposed as a hypocrite. No one did it to him. He did it to himself.

We all make mistakes, and even if we're not religious, I'm sure we all do things against our personal code of conduct. As one of Senator Crapo's constituents, I am grateful for the work he's done and willing to forgive him. Did he make a mistake? Definitely. I hope he gets his personal life in order so he can continue working to straighten up the mess in DC. He's been valiant in promoting solutions that make sense and been on several bi-partisan committees to do so. He has thus far been extremely loyal to those who voted him into office, despite his lapse of loyalty to his personal code of conduct, which while disappointing is forgivable. While I don't believe people can long be loyal to others without being loyal to what they believe, I also know humans are imperfect and can learn from their mistakes. I have full confidence that Senator Crapo will make his best effort to do so.
