Harris Teeter on S. Glebe Remains Closed

Clogged sewage line caused grocery store to halt operations on Friday.

The Harris Teeter on S. Glebe Road remains closed Monday after a sewage backup caused flooding inside the grocery store.

Shannon Whalen McDaniel of Arlington County’s Environmental Services Department said the suction line at the Potomac Yard lift station was “clogged with rags and debris” and that sewer operation issues were resolved by early Saturday morning.

An automated phone message at the Harris Teeter store said the location will remain closed until further notice because of “circumstances beyond our control and relating to a problem at the Potomac Yard lift station and the Arlington County Water Pollution Control Plant on Friday, May 11.”

A representative from Magnolia Plumbing, which responded to the issue at Harris Teeter, said the company sent its entire fleet of trucks to the grocery store on Friday afternoon.

Editor's note: This story was changed to include the correct name of the Potomac Yard lift station.

We were told at the Pentagon Row store that it could be closed at least 5 weeks. The good news is that the staff will be working at 3 other area stores in the interim.

Ashley - The Duke Street location told me 5 months but I'm hoping they misspoke and it is actually 5 weeks! What a mess!

I received a flyer in the mail from Harris Teeter about the issue. No indication of how long it will be closed, but it included $10 off coupons toward a $25 purchase. One coupon per week thru June 12th. So sounds like it'll be closed for at least a month. Flyer states sewage must be cleaned up and all grocery products must be replaced.

Jason, the store will reopen but the home office wouldn't give me a date. Here's a story I ran last week: http://delray.patch.com/articles/harris-teeter-will-reopen-but-date-unknown
