Harris Teeter Must Be Sanitized Before Reopening

Grocery store remains closed after sewage backup issue flooded the store.

The Harris Teeter on S. Glebe Road that closed Friday following a flood created by sewer issues will remain shut down until the grocery store is properly sanitized and the store is "reset."

The store will reopen only after a quality assurance team determines the cleanup of the store meets the requirements of the company, the health department and other organizations, according to an email sent to customers.

It has not been determined exactly when the Harris Teeter will reopen.

The work being performed includes sanitation, potential replacement of equipment and stocking the shelves with all new products.

The flooding occurred after a suction line at the Potomac Yard lift station was clogged with rags and debris, according to Arlington County’s Environmental Services Department. The circumstances that created the flood were beyond the store's control, according to an automated phone message and email from Harris Teeter.

Employees of the Potomac Yard store have been sent to work at other Harris Teeter stores in the area.

Potomac Yard pharmacy manager Barbara Bohacova and staff pharmacist Meghan Anderson are working out of the Village of Shirlington Harris Teeter (4250 Campbell Ave., Arlington) while the S. Glebe Road store remains closed. They can be contacted by calling 703-412-9144.

Thanks so much for keeping us up to date about the status of the re-opening of the Harris Teeter on Glebe. I'm very eager for them to re-open because the location is so convenient for all of us in Crystal City. While the Harris Teeter at Pentagon City is just as good, parking there is more difficult and it's quite a walk with a cart full of groceries to the metro for those who prefer to rely on the 9S bus and the metro for transportation.

The 10A bus goes from Crystal City to Joyce Street where the Harris Teeter is located but it runs only every 1/2 hr and only every 1 hr on Sundays. That's much less convenient than the 9S. They sent me coupons for $10 off with a $25 purchase so they may get me to the Pentagon City store. Otherwise, it's the Whole Foods near the King St. Metro. This closure is not good those of us without cars, hope they reopen in a month.
