Great Escape: Pamper Yourself

Take time to relax at a local spa or salon

It all started with fish. A few weeks ago, I got one of those daily deal emails advertising a manicure and “fishy” pedicure at a local salon for a discounted price. It was getting close to Mother’s Day, so I forwarded it to my husband with a not-so- subtle hint (“Get this for me for Mother’s Day”).

I have always been one to try new things, so the idea of having tiny fish nibble at my feet didn’t freak me out as much as it did most of my friends. I acted surprised when I received my gift, and I am looking forward to my day of fishy pampering.

The idea of the fishy pedicure made me realize a couple of things. First of all, I don’t spoil myself often enough if the idea of my feet being a meal for fish is appealing. Secondly, even if a manicure or pedicure has become mundane instead of relaxing, there’s always something new to try.

It seems like our community has a spa or salon on every other block, so it shouldn’t be difficult to find one nearby or a technician you like or service that relaxes you. This is just a sampling of what Alexandria has to offer:

Sugar House Day Spa and Salon — One of the more popular spas in Old Town offers a wide variety of services including medi-spa treatments.

Nails Foxy – If you’re looking for strictly nail and wax services, this salon in Old Town is one place to try. It offers walk-in appointments in case you find yourself with some last-minute free time.

The Gentleman’s Quarters – Specializing in spa and barber services for men, this establishment on Union Street in Old Town has been serving Alexandria for 28 years.

Anne Welsh Salon – Located in a giant old home along Mt. Vernon Avenue, Anne Welsh Salon offers salon services in addition to manicures and pedicures.

Elegant Nails – This full-service nail salon, located on the Avenue in Del Ray, lists a variety of nail treatments on their menu of services. Walk-ins are welcome.

Del Ray also offers a plethora of massage and spa-related services in various establishments along Mt. Vernon Avenue and beyond. See a complete listing here.

Although many people associate pampering services with women, many services appeal to men, too. Even the most masculine guy enjoys a good massage or even a hot shave.

As parents, we spend our days doing things for others, whether it’s our kids, other parents, our spouses or anyone else who needs something. Isn’t it about time to let someone take care of us?

The next time you get an hour or more to yourself, consider heading to one of the local spas or salons for some relaxation. There's no need to include the fish.

How do you pamper yourself? Is there a local establishment that gets your vote? Tell us in the comments.

My favorite local spas are Cloud9 Skincare for waxing, Pure Asthetica for facials, and Sugar Scrub on Commonwealth for nails.
