George Allen One of Four Candidates in Next Week’s Senate GOP Primary

Former senator, governor hopes to recapture his old Senate seat.

With congressional primary elections scheduled next week, Patch is profiling each of the four Republican candidates running for the U.S. Senate, who will face each other on the ballot June 12.

Former Senator and Gov. George Allen hopes to recapture the Senate seat he lost in 2006 to Democrat Jim Webb, who won the seat by less than 10,000 votes. Allen announced in January last year that he planned to run again. The next month, Webb announced his retirement from the Senate. Allen is up against three fellow Republicans vying for the seat: Jamie Radtke, Bob Marshall and E.W. Jackson. The winner of the primary will face Democrat former Gov. Tim Kaine in the general election.

George Felix Allen, 60, began his political career in 1982, shortly after graduating in 1977 from the University of Virginia Law School. He and wife Susan married in 1986 and have three children. The Allens live in Mount Vernon.

Public offices held: U.S. Senate 2000-2006; governor of Virginia 1994-1998; U.S. House of Representatives 1991-1993; House of Delegates 1982-1991.

On August 11, 2006, S.R. Sidarth, a 20-year-old "tracker" for the opposing Webb campaign was filming an Allen campaign stop in Breaks, Virginia, near the Kentucky border. During the speech, Allen paused, then began referring to Sidarth:

“This fellow here over here with the yellow shirt, Macaca, or whatever his name is. He's with my opponent. He's following us around everywhere. And it's just great. We're going to places all over Virginia, and he's having it on film and it's great to have you here and you show it to your opponent because he's never been there and probably will never come. [...] Let's give a welcome to Macaca, here. Welcome to America and the real world of Virginia.”

He was the only non-white person present among the crowd of 100 or so Republican supporters, some of whom applauded Allen's remarks

Ah yes...at least back then I could watch the chaos that is Virginia political mudslinging and say, "well at least i live in Maryland, and our candidates don't act like that." Having moved to VA in 2007 for work, I now get to enjoy it to its fullest, and be forced to choose between the ridiculous ads, one after another. The first one who runs an ad about what he himself stands for (not what his opponent stands for or against), wins in my book.

Did Madison call any of his 100+ slaves "Macaca"?

George Allen is an example of today's "typical" politician - He can't hold down a real job so he MUST get back into government where he can support archaic and nonsensical ideas, talk out both sides of his mouth, and in general just leech off the taxpayers while doing the "will" of the special interests. He reminds me of Mitch McConnell - If both of these guys actually had to go out and support themselves for a living, you'd probably see them at the airports carrying bags for people or shining shoes....but then again, why should I insult skycaps and shoe shiners.

President Obama was a Professor of Constitutional Law at the University of Chicago for 12 years (1992-2004), one of the best law schools in the country. Is that real enough for you? Also, speaking of school, it's spelled "Pal", not pale.

George Allen was the worst Virginia governor of my lifetime. As senator, he failed miserably to live up to the high standards set by John Warner and Chuck Robb. He's the worst kind of career politician - a political idealogue and special interest crony.

Allen is against protecting womens rights for birth control , abortion and equal pay. Allen is a guy born with a silver spoon in his mouth, gets retirement benefits from the State and federal government. He has lifetime health insurance but is opposed to poor people having the same. He wants to destroy medicare and social security, again he gets pensions and the average person doesn't. Why are people who are so poor willing to support this spoiled rich mean spirited man? I promise I will vote against him. He is in special interest pockets and not for the voter. Just look at who gives him huge sums of money. He is no Christian or man we can count on for anything.
