Del Ray Pizzeria Looking to Expand
Restaurant owners seek parking reduction to build rooftop patio.
Del Ray Pizzeria is looking to expand—and in a big way.
The folks behind the restaurant, which received a big endorsement from President Obama in December, have submitted plans to the city to expand the restaurant by 133 seats, including 40 seats on a seasonal outdoor patio to be constructed off the building’s roof.
The restaurant is applying for a parking reduction of 32 spaces. The application is scheduled to go before Alexandria’s Planning Commission on March 8.
If approved, the expanded restaurant will have a total of 125 indoors seats over two floors and 52 outdoor seats. It currently has just 44 seats.
In the application, the restaurant is referred as “the choice of President Obama for pizza.”
The restaurant was closed Tuesday for interior painting.

WIll the roof patio be facing Mt. Vernon Ave or the poor residents behind the restaurant?

A parking reduction? Parking in and around Mount Vernon is already a mess. We need more parking not less.

Where will those 177 seats park their cars? Sounds like they let that Presidential Pop-In go to their heads. It's never looked quite so busy to me.

Remember that you do not have to drive just everywhere. Walk, take the bike, make cartwheels... There are alternatives to driving. Absent more specific details about the plans, I have no specific opinion on the expansion but it seems ambitious.

I love DRP, but I seriously doubt their ability to handle the crowd if they quadruple the number of seats. Even now they get a little strained when the place is full. Plus where on earth would another 130 people park? Six bocks away? I fear they'll regret this if it actually happens. Many a restaurant has been killed by over-expansion.
P.S. I don't understand how their expansion would reduce parking by 32 spaces. Can someone explain?

God forbid you park on a residential street and walk two whole blocks to eat pizza.

@Matt - And what about those residents around Mt. Vernon Avenue who come home from work and can't find parking because restaurant patrons have taken your suggestion?
I think DRP is being overly ambitious. I don't think there is enough demand to justify their request, and the proposed parking reduction will be a hardship for the neighborhood.

@Matt: the concern is not the patrons who can chose to walk an extra block or two for their pizza, or not. It is for the residents who live near Mt. Vernon who have no choice as to where to park when they come home from work.
Already DRP does not provide enough parking for their staff, who park on the nearby streets for 8-10 hours at a time, much less customers. And now they want to triple the size of their restaurant with no additional parking? We love DRP and eat there at least once a week, but this is just too much.

Gee, Del Ray Pizza was ticketed for multiple violations during the 1-year review of their Administratively approved Special Use Permit shortly before the President visited. (So much for creating easy-to-follow SUP process instructions.)
Are you saying Obama endorses blatant violators or prospective hot, new businesses?
If Forum One wasn't such a stickler and would share that underutilized parking lot of theirs, some expansion could be okay. But given DRP's proven track record, I don't have much faith that it will.

@Rooney: Ok, maybe they're not poor residents, but residents nonetheless who deserve to have some input. I highly doubt DRP is proposing a roof deck facing the parking lot behind the restaurant, which would be disruptive to neighbors and probably not provide a great view for diners, but hopefully Drew can find out what they're planning. I'm curious.

Parking is a secondary issue for me. I want to know hear about their plan for 3-4x the trash. Check out the back of the place, which is kept very neat except for the grease.barrel around the side of the bldg, and see if you think there's a place to stash the trash.

My question is why are they expanding? Is there really the demand? Food/service is seriously lacking....POTUS got bad advice.

When will Del Ray issue residential parking permits? I walk and ride my bicycle as much as possible: to work, to the grocery, to the gym, to the hardware store, yet I do use my car from time to time. I would prefer to park at my house not down the street because of the city's poor parking planning.
