Del Ray Pizzeria Hosting Super Bowl Wing Eating Contest

How many "XXX" chicken wings can you can eat in 5 minutes?

Del Ray Pizzeria on Mount Vernon Avenue is hosting a chicken wing eating contest on Sunday during halftime of Super Bowl XLVII.

“We were thinking we weren’t too excited about either of the teams, so we thought a wing eating contest might be a way to have some more fun,” DRP Chef Eric Reid said.

The winner of the contest will be determined by who can eat the most “XXX” wings—the restaurant’s hottest variety—in 5 minutes.

Those interested in competing can register for the contest at the DRP bar. There is a $15 registration fee. The winner will take home a $50 Del Ray Pizzeria gift card, a six-pack of Bell’s Hopslam Ale and a T-shirt.

Along with the wing contest, Del Ray Pizzeria’s draft list on Super Bowl Sunday will exclusively feature beers from California and Maryland in honor of the game's participants—the Baltimore Ravens and the San Francisco 49ers.

The one exception on the draft list will be Port City Brewing Company’s Two, a smoked imperial porter concocted to celebrate the Alexandria brewery’s second anniversary.

Reid told Patch he recently added some new entrees to the menu. The pizza selections, however, remain the same.

Del Ray Pizzeria is located at 2218 Mount Vernon Ave. It was voted the best sports bar in Del Ray and Old Town in the Patch Readers' Choice contest

It would be nice if the money spent on wings was instead donated to local food shelters, which are seeing increased demand in this tight economy. Overeating is not healthy and a waste of food, even if it is entertaining for some.
