Councilwoman Hughes Faces Eviction Proceedings

Hughes is appealing court judgment against her.

Alexandria City Councilwoman Alicia Hughes is appealing a court judgment against her on claims she failed to pay rent to her landlord.

Last week a judge ruled in default in favor of Realty Management Services Inc., which owns The Strand of Alexandria apartments on Yoakum Parkway, after Hughes failed to appear in court, according to court papers. Realty Management was awarded $2,296.49 in back rent, $52 in court costs and $500 in attorney’s fees, court documents state.

Hughes had filed a motion to dismiss the case based on what she alleged was a lack of proper legal notification about the case against her. In her motion, Hughes stated that she did not receive a copy of the filing in the mail and only received a posting from the sheriff upon returning home Jan. 10.

Hughes also said in her motion that she is working with the apartment property manager to “cure inaccuracies in her account ledger.” Her motion was denied upon her failing to appear, according to court papers.

Hughes, reached by telephone Wednesday, said she is appealing the judgment. She had no further comment other than to say in an email, "The merits of this case have not been heard and there is no final disposition.”

First elected to city council in 2009, Hughes has faced multiple legal actions from Realty Management. One case was dismissed in September 2011 after Realty Management admitted a mistake in its computer system.

General District Court records show that Realty Management Services has dropped several similar mistaken cases against Hughes in the past but was awarded default judgment against her in unlawful detainer cases in September 2008, April 2009 and January 2011.

A City Councilor might be evicted, because she didn't bother to show up in court and/or pay her rent on time (or "cure inaccuracies in her account ledger")? Rather embarrasing to the City. Also puzzling that as a lawyer, she didn't realize the consequences of default.

I don't think Hughes is really an attorney. When asked under oath at a 2009 residency hearing as to which state bars she was a member of, she declined to answer. She was sued by her law school alma mater, the University of Miami, for a sum of $15,000 if I recall correctly. That was some time ago in Florida but anyone can look it up. I don't know if she took a bar exam and failed, or never took one, or was never allowed to take one. For example, if her degree was withheld for non-payment of tuition or something, she would not be allowed to sit for the bar exam. So, she may or may not be a law school graduate, but she is not admitted to practice law in VA, MD, DC, FL, TX or TN. I called each of those state bars personally in 2009 and she was not a member. Those are all the places that I know about where she lived or attended school or worked. In any event, I concur that this is extremely embarrassing to the city and if she had any integrity at all, she'd resign.

It is rather embarrassing, for both her and the city. If, as she contends, this is an error by the management company, and they are known to have made errors in the past, I wonder why she hasn't moved. I have never been in this situation--accused of not paying my bills--but I sure wouldn't want a management company repeatedly sullying my reputation if I'd done nothing wrong.

I find it offensive that Ms. Gordon, who is running for City Council as a Democrat, is using these pages to personally attack a potential opponent. It is sad that the politics of personal destruction have come to Alexandria. If that is the way Ms. Gordon and the Democrats want to engage in this campaign, be forewarned: You may not like what some people find about your pasts.

Mr Tallmerq, you are seriously misinformed. I am NOT running for City Council. whoever told you that was lying to you.

Mr. Tallmerq, the whole sordid saga is just weird. For example, Hughes lists a postion with the National Bar Association on her LinkedIn profile, but they have no record of her every having worked there. She lists herself as a recipient of the 2011 Aspen Institute Rodel Fellow for Public Leadership award, but their website does NOT list her as one of the awardees, but the lawyer who sued her for failure to pay, State Senator Jill Vogel, is listed as a 2011 awardee. Hughes lists herself as still being in the employ of the Delware Biotechnology Institute, but their HR department stated that Hughes worked there for only 4 weeks in 2011 and is no longer employed there. She was never Miss Black USA as she claimed, she was not, to my knowledge, a licensed attorney as she claimed, and on and on. I think we're being bamboozled. I'm not running for city council although a few people asked me to consider it and one person started a facebook page to get me to run, but I have made my position clear. Alicia Hughes is not my opponent. She is one of my elected representatives on city council and I, like every other citizen, have a right to question her public statements. Everyone has unhappy or sad or misguided events in their past, but not everyone lies about it. That is the issue here - Ms. Hughes' pile of lies and unpaid debts.

Hi Matt, you may be confusing Gail Gordon with myself, Scott Gordon. I am running for City Council but like Ms. Hughes, I am a republican. www.gordonforalexandria.com.

I doubt I am seriously misinformed. Gail Gordon's Facebook page lists her as a Democratic candidate for City Council in Alexandria in 2012. Unless there are two Gail Gordon's in the city both interested in muncipal affairs and both attorneys, I am not mistaken. Heres the link:

That is NOT MY Facebook page. My friend Pat Malone created that page in an attempt to convince me to run. You will note that he is the administrator and creator of that page and that he added me as an admin some time ago. I told him to remove it. I am NOT running and you ARE misinformed. Get your facts straight and if you have any further issues, please contact Pat directly and he will tell confirm that he created the page over a year ago. The page is set for deletion and I don't know why it still shows up.

In addition, rather than attacking me, Mr. Tallmer, when I am a private citizen who isn't running for anything, why don't you ask Alicia Hughes to explain herself? Your efforts so far aren't doing anything to clean up the mess Alicia Hughes has created. Better yet, go pay all of the back rent and attorney's fees she owes so she can continue to live here in Alexandria and run for council again. I would enjoy the spectacle of the Alexandria Republican Committee trying to defend her actions.

Gail Gordon is correct. I created a Facebook page, for her, quite some time ago, in the thought that she would run for a seat on the Alexandria City Council in 2012. She decided, also some time ago, that she didn't want to run, and the page was inadvertently left up, but was never used. It's due to be deactivated in the next day or so, too.

I would hope that either the Patch or one of the other news outlets in Alexandria would attempt to confirm what Gail Gorden is alleging and do some journalism. If these allegations are true she should resign immediately. If true she has mislead the public and does not deserve the honor of representing the City of Alexandria.
