If a new pet is on your shopping list this Black Friday, you're in luck: The Animal Welfare League of Alexandria will host a Black Friday Adoption Special for homeless animals at the Vola Lawson Animal Shelter next week.
The event will last from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 23.
As part of event, potential adopters can name their own adoption fee for all animals ages 6 months and older, according to the shelter. Animals 5 months old and younger will be available for adoption at the normal fee.
The minimum adoption fee is $10. Adoption fees for adult dogs and cats usually range around $150 and $120, respectively. The cost includes spay and neuter surgeries, vaccinations, health screenings, microchipping and more.
“Our Black Friday Adoption Special is one of our most popular events,” said Kathy Vellenga, director of adoption programs, in a statement.
“We’d like to send as many animals home as possible, and by allowing adopters to name their own adoption fee, we hope to draw attention to the care and commitment the League puts into all animals before they ever become available for adoption. Some folks will pay the $10 minimum and some will pay more than our standard rate, but as any animal lover will tell you, the lasting benefits of adopting far outweigh any financial cost.”
More than 20 animals were placed in homes following the 2011 Black Friday adoption event.
