Alexandria Resident Jeffrey Engle Announces Run for 45th District House of Delegates Seat

Engle lists party affiliation as Independent, in campaign to unseat Democrat Del. Rob Krupicka.

City of Alexandria resident Jeffrey Engle has launched a campaign to run for the 45th District seat in Virginia's House of Delegates. The seat represents parts of Alexandria, Arlington and Fairfax County.

In his Statement of Organization filed with the State Board of Elections, Engle lists an address in Alexandria as his residence and his political party as "independent." Independent candidates wishing to run in the general election are required to submit their nomination petitions by June 11. Nomination petitions must contain the signatures of at least 125 qualified voters in the legislative district.

Engle launched a website to announce his run and collect campaign contributions. On the site, he says:

Are you tired of politicians being more concerned about their party winning than their constituents?

So are we.

Its time for a new breed of legislator who cares more about the impact of legislation, regulation, and expenditure on the people of the 45th District and the Commonwealth of Virginia than he does about party politics.

Jeffrey Engle is a proven leader whose sound judgment has continuously been demonstrated in the military and private sector.

He believes now is the time for effective governance, efficient expenditure, education for the future, and fulfilling the obligations made to our elderly, disabled, children and veterans.

Sound judgment. Proven leadership.

Although Engle lists his opinions on some issues, he is short on specifics.

Described as a "highly decorated combat veteran," on his campaign website, Engle reportedly works as a senior program analyst at Cubic Corporation in Alexandria, according to a business profile on LinkedIn. He earned a master's in Political Science from Virginia Tech, according to his campaign site.

The 45th District seat is currently held by Del. Rob Krupicka, a Democrat who served nine years on the Alexandria City Council prior to handily winning his delegate seat in a special election Sept. 4 after Del. David Englin, also a Democrat, resigned. Englin decided not to run again after admitting to not being faithful to his wife. Krupicka previously lost a primary race for the 30th District Senate seat.

Engle is getting the word out about his campaign via a Facebook page and Twitter account. He sent out his first tweet on Sunday: "Im up on Twitter for the campaign. Follow me and help bring some pragmatism to politics!"

On his site, he announced he would be in Old Town Alexandria Friday, gathering signatures from voters for his petition.

I'm told he's a Republican, but whatever. What all voters want to see are specifics. What are his positions on reproductive rights, marriage equality, the recently passed transportation plan, etc? Does he have any endorsements and if so, from whom? What exactly is his platform? Any job retention or creation ideas for Virginia and for the 45th District in particular? How does his personal and professional experience translate to effective public service? Has he served on any boards and commissions in town? Worked on any campaigns? Volunteered for any groups? Details please, Mr. Engle.

Uh, I think the Statement of Organization is a pretty simple form you file to initiate a campaign. But I like your genius suggestion that a candidate should share his platform, etc. with the voters. Maybe he'll do that between now and the election in 8 months.

And we're off. When I read this article this morning, I wondered how long it would take for the attacks to begin. And no surprise that Gail was the first out of the gate. Though I supported Rob and likely will continue to do so, having opposing viewpoints makes the system better. Why don't we give the process a chance?

As this article clearly states, he has a website up, not just a statement of organization. Normally, a candidate states his or her positions on their website. There is nothing of substance on Engle's website, and it's been up for at least a week. He shouldn't have gone live with it if it wasn't ready to be reviewed. I applaud him for having the guts and determination to run, but don't make it amateur hour. That's just embarrassing for all concerned. If he's going to run, he has to take it seriously.

No specifics on his facebook page either and nothing to speak of on his twitter account. All I could tell from either is that ihe s against the repeal of the 2nd Amendment, which is not within the scope of a state delegate's authority anyway. If he wants to run a serious race, he really needs to step up his game.

I guess you're right. I went to a party last night and all people were talking about were the House of Delegates races next fall. Get with it Mr. Engle! Times a'wastin' and you're EMBARRASING yourself.

He claims to have received quite a number of medals and honors. If I were a journalist, I certainly would be seeking confirmation that he is not trying to pull a "Scott Gordon". Credit to him if they are real, but Alexandria voters shouldn't be trusting newcomers at face value, given what's happened before.

Are you accusing Scott Gordon of falsifying military experience?

As I recall, Scott Gordon lied about his educational background.

Aren't most people in Alexandria newcomers? I grew up here but it seems like we have lots of transplants because of the government and military. Moran is from Boston and Warner is from Indiana and they keep getting elected.

to Robt C: what's your definition of "newcomer?" I wasn't born in Alexandria, but have lived over 30 years in No. Va./Alexandria. I don't consider myself a "newcomer." This area is very transient in general, due to the federal government. Moran and Warner have lived/worked around here for a long time....I don't consider them "newcomers" either.

I was defending the word "newcomer", and commenting on the post above me from Matt that read "but Alexandria voters shouldn't be trusting newcomers at face value". I think you misread my post. I have no problem with a "newcomer". I'm happy with Mark Warner.
