Republican Party Sets Canvass for Thursday
The canvass is scheduled to be held in three locations on Aug. 2.
The 45th District Committee of the Republican Party of Virginia has issued a call for a party canvass for Aug. 2.
The event is being organized to nominate a Republican candidate for the state delegate's office being vacated by Del. David Englin.
Candidates for the GOP nomination must file a written statement by mail, email or in person to Committee Chairman Heath Wells, 1301 Queen St., Alexandria, or heath.wells.esq@gmail.com, by Wednesday at 5 p.m. If only one candidate files, then that candidate will be declared the Republican nominee and no canvass will be held.
Wells told Patch on Tuesday that as many as three Republicans were seeking last-minute approvals from their employers and families to enter the race.
The canvass is currently scheduled to be held from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. at:
- The Minnie Howard Campus of T.C. Williams High School, 3801 W. Braddock Rd., Alexandria
- The Springfield Victory Center, 6320 Augusta Dr., Springfield.
- The Arlington County Republican Headquarters, 405 S. Glebe Rd., Arlington

Frank Fannon, because he is a left-leaning moderate, is the ONLY Republican who would have a shot at even having a chance to win in the 45th, and he'd be a long shot, at best. Frank could obviously get Republican votes, but I think that he could also get a lot of Independent and some Democrat votes, too. I'm a liberal/progressive Democrat who happens to think that Frank Fannon is both a good gentleman, but he's also good for Alexandria. I'm quite sure that Republicans will be calling Frank to ask if he would consider throwing his hat in the ring for this race, even though he is running for reelection to the Alexandria City Council. There just aren't any other Republicans in the 45th who could step up to the plate like Frank can, and he could probably raise a ton of money to do it, too. My guess is that the Republicans will inevitably hold their party canvass and not nominate anyone from their ranks to run.

Well, the Alexandria Republican City Committee now adds to bringing home a HUGE laugh factor by endorsing a guy like Tim McGhee, who, quite frankly, has to know that he will absolutely get stomped when he runs against Rob Krupicka. Why doesn't the ARCC put forward any credible candidates? Look, I know that there are only 14 members of the ARCC, but out of the 14 of them, Tim McGhee must have some very controversial pictures of them doing something nefarious. I'm just shocked and amazed, as I'm sure everyone is, that Tim McGhee is going to embarrass the ARCC, once again.

People should just go to the Republican caucus and write in Frank Fannon. I find it interesting that not a single one of the Republican caucus polling sites are actually in the district for which they are voting to nominate a candidate. Who planned that?

Since McGhee was the only candidate to cross the finish line, the canvass tonight was canceled. He is the candidate.

Gail, I think, or hope, that Frank Fannon would stay a million miles away from Tim McGhee, and anything to do with his campaign. If I were Frank Fannon, I would seriously look at how the Alexandria Republican City Committee and their baffoonery and amateurish shenanegans can potentially bring down his reelection campaign for Alexandria City Council. Frank Fannon is a smart man. That's how he got elected to the Alexandria City Council in the first place. Frank's got to distance himself from the ARCC or he will be seen as a wing nut (which he isn't) like they are. The right wing ideologues and crack pot zealots have taken over the Alexandria Republican City Committee, and Frank Fannon, as we all know, is thankfully not one of them. The ARCC is most certainly not doing Frank Fannon any favors, that's for sure.
